Congratulation to the Class of 2018

Life is a journey, and often new pathways are taken at points in time along the excursion. Today is one of those days. As you cross this stage and receive your diploma, you have completed this phase of formal public education. Where will the map of life take you next? For some of you, it will be a college or a university of your choice; some have completed union testing to enter a trade. Some of you have signed on with the military, and yet still some have chosen at this time to enter the work force.

This year’s school theme has been, “Going the Extra Mile.”   Today, sitting in this gym celebrating your accomplishments are people who have traveled that extra mile with you over the past 18 years. Your parents have gone that extra mile, possibly dropping of that lunch you forgot on the counter, taking you to a practice or rehearsal and then picking you back up. Visiting colleges with you and then sitting down with you to compare colleges and financial information. Sorry parents this extra mile will require a few more laps around the track.

Next is the faculty that sits here with you today. They have helped you finish that senior paper; they created extra preparations for those AP tests. At times, they have been your life counselors and support systems. They are your coaches who have put in that extra 20 minutes of pitching practice at 7:00 am in the morning or met you for a career development event on a Saturday. They have travelled with you, and celebrated with you as you have competed in IHSA state series or at a state competition. As educators, we too are on a life journey, and it has been a joy to be your travel companion.

The extra mile is often easier travelled with family and friends. When you are surrounded by people who love you, the burden of travelling can be far more comfortable. Take notice today of your family and friends and thank them for the journey. It might be to that aunt who travelled hours today to celebrate with you or that friend that has gone with you to four homecomings and two proms. The memories will live on in your hearts and minds because they have been part of the adventure.

I leave you with these poetic words from musician Tom Cochrane

Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore…

Life is a highway
I want to ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I want to drive it all night long

Class of 2018 – The highway awaits.
