Hello!
I am Amanda Layne, School Social Worker for Manteno High School. The 2012-2013 school year will be my eighth year as a social worker in the district. I have worked in the elementary, middle and high schools. I am currently at the high school full time.
I am married to Matt Layne and we have one daughter, Avery, who was born in May, 2011. We love to travel and enjoy going to sporting events. We are huge Chicago Bears fans!!
The Role of the Social Worker at Manteno High School
I have several roles here at Manteno High School. First, I provide support services to the Special Education Program. Specifically, individual, group, and family interventions are provided to students mandated to receive social work services per their individual education plan. I carry out these tasks through the development of measurable goals for each student on my caseload, data collection to determine the progress that has been made, and counseling (group and individual) to teach my students the skills they need to successfully reach their goals.
Another large part of my job is being a part of the Response to Intervention (RtI) Team. This is a group of Administrators, Support Staff and Teachers who work together to implement research-based interventions to students who are at-risk academically or behaviorally.
As the school social worker my job is to focus on the individual wellness of my students in order for them to achieve maximum academic benefit from their educational program. By focusing on students' social, emotional, and personal development, I am able to better help students cope with stress in their lives, develop self-management skills as well as personal responsibility, and develop decision-making and problem-solving skills. Some of the issues that interfere with a student's academic and social functioning are:
low self-esteem problems with anger management substance use/abuse depression/suicide stress/anxiety grief/loss |
eating disorders problems in dating/relationships limited social skills mental illness family dysfunction |
Social Work Student Support Services
Any student at Manteno High School is welcome to come and see me about any issue that is on their mind! I will talk with the student and assess whether or not counseling in school is appropriate. If it is an issue that I feel would be better addressed outside of school I will call the parent/guardian and suggest outside counseling. (CLICK ON "FILES" above for a complete list, or scroll down)
Examples of Student Support Groups that have been run at Manteno High School:
Ø Anger Management Group offers supports and teaches skills to students in resolving and managing their anger in appropriate ways.
Ø Grief Group offers supports to students who dealing with the loss of a loved one.
Ø Self-esteem Group offers support and skill-building in the development of a healthy self-concept.
Ø Social Skills Group offers and support skill-building in the development of appropriate social skills.
Ø Senior Transition Group offers and supports students in developing decision-making and problem-solving skills specifically related to the challenges they may face after graduation.
Sometimes a student's situation calls for crisis intervention, in which the social worker conducts an assessment of the case, and develops an intervention plan, often including appropriate referrals to, and follow-up and liaison work with outside agencies.
All information a student tells me will remain strictly confidential!
I am unable to share specific information a student tells me with anyone unless I have the student's permission.
The only three exceptions to this rule would be if the student were to tell me:
(1) someone was abusing them,
(2) they had thoughts or intentions to harm themselves, and/or
(3) they had thoughts or intentions to harm someone else.
